 China to drink more white ~ new study released……

The report, Emerging Opportunities in the Chinese Wine Market, was released in April this year highlights the growing diversification of Chinese consumer tastes, including a new-found preference for white wine. Its author, research manager Jenny Li, said that although red wine still accounts for more than 85% of the total wine sales in China, white wine was growing in popularity, particularly in China’s southern regions.

‘It is a reflection of regional palates: southerners tend to dislike astringent and tannic styles. In addition, lighter southern cuisine is a more appropriate match for white wine’, said Li. In terms of grape preferences, Li’s research indicated that Sauvignon Blanc is the most popular grape with Chinese consumers, accounting for a significant percentage of New Zealand’s rising wine exports to China.

While some people are skeptical this trend will continue across all of China, we noted at the recent Discover Wines of South Africa show in Shanghai we were serving more white than red wine. At The Wine People, we have always given equal importance to our white and red portfolio as we believe the market is now more confident trusting their palette and selecting wines which are more suited to the climate and the food they are eating.

 

Taittinger has become the first Champagne house to plant vines in England…..

The first wines from Domaine Evremond are expected to be released in 2023, after the vineyard has had three years to establish itself before its first harvest, and then a further three years bottle ageing.

The British wine industry has doubled in the past decade: the isle is now home to more than 130 wineries and 500 vineyards covering 2,000 hectares. Thanks to the success of pioneering wineries such  as Nyetimber, Ridgeview and Chapel Down, fizz has emerged as the country's strongest suit: more than half of the vineyards in Britain are now planted to chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier (the classic trio of grapes found in Champagne), and about two-thirds of the country's annual wine production is sparkling. The growth shows no sign of slowing down, either: output is set to double by 2020 from 5 million to 10 million bottles annually.

Following the hugely successful launch of the Ned and The King’s Series in China earlier this year, we are pleased to confirm we are extending the product range. We have added The Ned Pinot Noir (Gold Medal New World Wine Awards), The Ned Pinot Gris and The King’s Favour Sauvignon Blanc (Double Gold – China Wine Awards / 4 stars Cuisine Magazine). Winemaker and owner, Brent Marris will be visiting China in May to introduce his wines and we look forward to giving you all the opportunity to taste and enjoy at a range of events we are hosting.  

 

  

 

 Edgebaston: new wines arrive from South Africa……

The Finlayson family is synonymous with modern era winemaking in the Cape region so it is no surprise David Finlayson followed in his father and grandfather’s footsteps. David honed his winemaking skills at Peter Lehman (Australia) and Chateau Margaux (France) before returning to South Africa. In 2004, he started Edgebaston where a quality and a holistic approach to the production of wine is their ethos.

We are excited to be importing some of their award winning wines including the Camino Africana Cabernet Franc (Double Gold Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards / 93pts Tim Atkin), The Berry Box (86pts eRobert Parker) and The Pepper Pot (88pts eRobert Parker). The last two wines being some of our favorite easy drinking red wines to enjoy after a hard day at the office.

Asara Wine Estate ~ 2 wines in the top 100……

We are excited to celebrate The Cape Fusion and the Bell Tower winning Double Platinum awards at the South African National Wine Challenge this month.  This puts both these wines in the Top 100 SA Wines for 2017. The Chenin Blanc 2016 also won a double gold medal just missing out on the Top 100 list.  These awards are a testament to the hard work from Pete Gottgens & his team to bring Asara wines to the next level and we are now seeing the influence of their new winemaker Danielle le Roux (Cape Wine Master), who joined Asara in October 2015.
